When Should You Relocate Your NBN Box?

Relocating your NBN box is recommended if it has been installed in a location that is:

• Poorly ventilated, such as a tightly enclosed cupboard

• Exposed to average temperatures below 10°C

• Regularly exposed to temperatures above 40°C (e.g. ceiling, wall, or floor cavities)

• Damp or wet, including bathrooms or laundries

• Located in high-traffic areas where it may be knocked or damaged (such as hallways)

• Positioned near or below a heater, which may cause overheating

While these conditions fall outside NBN installation guidelines, NBN boxes are sometimes installed in unsuitable locations. Many clients also choose relocation for aesthetic reasons or if the box has been installed in an inappropriate area such as a bedroom.

 

What’s Involved in Relocating Your NBN Box?

 

Selecting a New Location

Choose a new position for your NBN box that complies with NBN guidelines and suits your space. If you’re unsure, ACI Cabling technicians can recommend an optimal location based on accessibility, ventilation, and network performance.

Site Assessment

Before relocation begins, a fully licensed technician will assess the proposed location to ensure all internal phone and data cabling can be correctly routed back to the NBN connection point.

Cabling & Installation

Existing copper or fibre connections are re-run and terminated from the external connection point (PCD) to the NTD. In some cases, new coaxial or fibre cabling may be required depending on distance, wall cavity access, and building layout.

Restoring Operation

Once installed, the NBN box is checked to ensure normal operation. A solid or flashing green STATUS light confirms connectivity, while a solid green POWER light indicates the unit is receiving power correctly.

Service Testing

All services are tested following installation, including phone services (if applicable) and internet connectivity, using professional-grade testing equipment to confirm optimal performance.
